Blitzball

Blitzball How-To

Introduction

Blitzball on Mallboro is a simulation of a blitzball game. It was designed to mimic Final Fantasy X's game of blitzball, but now you can use characters from any Final Fantasy! Nobody actually plays the game. The characters swim around freely and use horrible A.I. to decide what to do. All you need to do is create your character(s) and assign them stat points.

There are six stats to put points into: shot, pass, endurance, catch, block, and tackle. For those that are unfamiliar, shot is your ability to shoot, pass is your ability to pass (go figure), endurance is the amount of "life" you have, catch is your goal keeping ability (counters shot), block is your ability to block shots and passes, and tackle is your attack (counters endurance). It's a typical game with a center, two forwards, two defenders, and a keeper. Try to score points, most at the end wins.

Note: There are no abilities in this simulator. More on this below in "Abilities".

Assigning Stats

If you are creating a character for blitzball that is a Player Character, that is, he/she is one of the characters you are playing in Mallboro, you are allowed to start at Level 2 with 45 stat points. If he/she is an NPC (Non-Player Character), you must start at Level 1 with 40 stat points.

For help designing a character's stats, I have provided a program to help you do so called "Stat Builder." You can download it in the link at the bottom of this page or on the previous page.

You may do the stats by hand or with the program, but keep three things in mind:
1. All stats should be at least 1 to cause fewer mishaps during the match.
2. Catch, which is listed as 'goal' in the program, costs 3 stat points to upgrade one point.
3. During actual gameplay, the numbers are slightly randomized, so it is not impossible for a Shot of 7 to score against a Catch/Goal of 9.

"Abilities"

There are no abilities in blitzball. Instead of abilities, we have included two special rules, both centered around the keeper.

Super Goalie: It is important for all characters to have a goal stat because of the Super Goalie. Whenever a shot is taken, the keeper will randomly pick a player on his/her own team. Then, that player's Catch ability is added to the keeper's Catch to try to block the shot.

Gamble: It is also important for the goalie to have stats besides catch because of Gamble. Whenever an encounter occurs, each of the characters involved will randomly get a stat boost in either shot, pass, endurance, block, or tackle. This boost is equal to the keeper's stat in that particular field. The boost will not always help you. If your character is tackling, they may receive a boost in their shooting ability, which means they receive no help. In essence, you only receive a helpful boost 20% of the time.

Programs

Stat Builder: Stat Builder (as mentioned before) will help you design your character. To use it, follow the instructions and input your character's name, then your character's number of stat points (again, Player Characters get 45, NPCs get 40). On the next screen, you will see a chart of all the stats and how many points you currently have in them. To adjust a stat, simply type the stat in lowercase (if you do not use lowercase letters, expect the program to crash). Then, use left and right to adjust the amount; left for decrease, right for increase. When you are finished, type 'q' to quit, and the program will create a text document containing your stats in the same folder destination as the program itself.

BlitzMall: If you are interested in using this simulator for your own fun, you can download the program here, along with the C++ document needed to edit it and put in your own characters. There is a how-to file included, which will teach you (I hope) how to design your own teams. It might be difficult if you have never coded in C++, but at least one non-C++ user is able to do it! If you have any questions with this program or anything else about Mallboro Blitzball, please contact Bob or Count Lieberkuhn in The Goat Pen Forums or through the information provided in the "Players" section of Mallboro.
